International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women:

Why It Matters 🌍💜

Observed on November 25th every year, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is a global reminder of the urgent need to combat gender-based violence in all its forms. Established by the United Nations in 1999, this day honors the Mirabal Sisters, activists from the Dominican Republic who were murdered in 1960 for opposing the Trujillo dictatorship. It serves as a day to raise awareness about the violence that women and girls face worldwide and to take action against it.

Gender-based violence is an epidemic affecting 1 in 3 women globally, according to the World Health Organization. From domestic violence and sexual assault to harassment and trafficking, women and girls experience violence in their homes, workplaces, and communities. This day calls for international solidarity and action to support survivors, challenge harmful gender norms, and advocate for policies that protect women’s rights.

Why It Matters in the Workplace
Violence against women doesn’t stop at the door of the home—it often spills over into the workplace, affecting mental health, productivity, and safety. Women who experience domestic violence or harassment are more likely to struggle with absenteeism, mental health challenges, and financial insecurity. For businesses, addressing violence against women is not only a moral responsibility but also an economic necessity. Creating supportive, safe environments for women increases employee well-being and retention.

Workplace initiatives such as anti-harassment training, access to mental health support, and flexible leave for survivors of violence can make a tremendous difference. Companies that invest in policies supporting women’s safety and rights demonstrate a commitment to gender equality, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable workplace culture.
