LGBTQ+ National Day of Silence:

Why It Matters

Every year, on the second Friday in April, students and allies across the U.S. observe the LGBTQ+ National Day of Silence to protest the bullying, discrimination, and silencing of LGBTQ+ individuals. Participants take a vow of silence to symbolize the struggles of those whose voices have been suppressed due to fear, bias, and exclusion.

This day, which began in 1996, is now one of the largest student-led movements advocating for LGBTQ+ rights. It has also extended beyond schools into workplaces, where LGBTQ+ professionals often feel pressured to hide their identities.
