Strengthen your workplace relationships

Looking for a quick, actionable way to observe Social Wellness Month? This post gives you a fast, DIY DEI tip you can apply right now.

Every July, Social Wellness Month invites us to reflect on the quality of our relationships—with ourselves, our colleagues, and our communities. It’s a reminder that belonging, connection, and psychological safety are essential for well-being at work. Social wellness isn’t just about feeling good—it’s about creating spaces where people can trust, thrive, and support one another across lines of difference.

Why Social Wellness Month Matters

Five people in an office celebrate Independence Day; one person throws confetti, others hold wrapped gifts, and two seated individuals clap in the foreground.

Social Wellness Month is more than a feel-good initiative—it’s a workplace culture checkpoint. It highlights how exclusion, isolation, and microaggressions directly harm well-being and retention. For marginalized employees, workplace relationships are often where inclusion either grows or breaks down.

Social wellness also carries different weight across cultures. In collectivist communities, connection and group belonging are core to identity. In individualistic cultures, social wellness may focus more on self-care and balancing personal and professional boundaries.

When we actively build healthier workplace relationships, we move closer to cultures of equity and care. This foundation leads us directly into today’s action step.

One Inclusive Celebration Idea: Host a “Connection Audit” Session

Four people work at desks with laptops in front of a green background displaying icons of gears, charts, and a lightbulb representing ideas, teamwork, and Independence Day-inspired creativity.

Start by inviting your team to reflect on their workplace connections. You can do this through a 30-minute guided “Connection Audit” conversation during a team meeting.

Here’s how to structure it:

  • Open with this prompt: “Think about the people you interact with most at work. Are these connections supportive? Do they cross teams, levels, or lived experiences?”
  • Ask each person to write down:
    • One strong, affirming workplace connection they want to nurture.
    • One area where they feel disconnected or isolated.
  • Facilitate a team discussion around how to intentionally build cross-team, cross-role, or cross-cultural connections moving forward.
  • Encourage action: Have everyone choose one relationship to invest in this month (reach out, check in, or collaborate).

This quick exercise builds awareness, strengthens empathy, and encourages proactive relationship-building. It’s a practical step toward embedding social wellness into your team culture.
